Unit Essential Question

How can we access, generate, process, and transfer information using appropriate technologies?

Vocabulary

  • Hardware – computer physical components. Examples are monitors, Central Processing Unit, keyboard, mouse, etc.
  • Software– set of instructions that direct the hardware to accomplish a task.
  • Binary Number System – express the positive number as 1 and the non-positive number as the number 0
  • Bit– binary digit (that 1 or 0)
  • Byte – a string of eight bits (0s or 1s). A byte is used to represent 256 individual characters (numbers, letters, and so no).
  • CPU (Central Processing Unit) – the most important component inside of the case. It is the central to all processing done by the computer.
  • Port – physical connector that allows a cable from a peripheral device (keyboard, mouse, etc.) to be attached to the computer.
  • Monitor – visually displays the output of the computer.
  • Resolution – sharpness and clearness of an image
  • Pixels– number of dots used for display on the screen.
  • Printer – output device which produces output on paper. Two types of printers today (ink-jet and laser printers)

Create Your Own Crossword Puzzle

Make a crossword puzzle using 15 or more vocabulary words related to computer hardware. You may use five of the words on this page (look above) for your puzzle. Using your IC3 textbook select 10 additional vocabulary words. Terms should be selected from the Computing Fundamentals section of the textbook.
  • Open a new document that lets you enter text like: a Microsoft Word or Google Doc.
  • Make a list of words and clues.
Write the clues in your own words. Clues must be understandable by another person. Do not copy - paste from a website.
Use the words on this page to create a crossword puzzle
Separate each word and its clue with a space. (Ex. TheMotherboard the most important circuit board) Your Words can NOT have spaces, your clues can.
Press the Enter key once after each clue, except for the last clue. Clues can be up to 255 characters long.
Proofread the words and clues. It is funny how spelling errors and typos sneak in to the best work.
SAVE this document to your folder in My Documents. You will submit a copy of this words/clues sheet. If you used Google Docs you will share it with me. (cparadis@akron.k12.oh.us)
